Physiotherapy After Stroke

Physiotherapy can help you to learn to move again after a stroke, so that you can get around more easily and improve your ability to carry out daily tasks. Here we discuss what we can do, and why it is important to seek physiotherapy after having a stroke.

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain either bursts or is obstructed by a clot. Essentially, a part of the brain suffers an injury because it does not receive the blood it requires to function adequately. It can affect a survivor’s movements, communication, processing, and emotions.

Immediately after stroke, most people receive physiotherapy within the hospital setup and are provided with an NHS community physiotherapist for a brief period of time following their discharge. However, we have found that a lot of people have not reached their full potential by the end of their NHS care, and an ongoing period of specialist rehabilitation can help people to improve their mobility, strength, balance and energy levels.

Why is physiotherapy important for stroke survivors?

In the time following a stroke, recovery can be accelerated with hands on treatment. Recent studies demonstrate that optimal physical activity after stroke can reduce the risk of another stroke by 35%.

Our stroke rehabilitation treatment helps stroke survivors gain independence in a safe and effective manner after their discharge from the hospital.
